COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Most of the Colorado Springs City Council opposes $100 billion federal jobs bill even though it could brings tens of millions of dollars to the financially struggling city.
Mayor Lionel Rivera asked council members Monday if he should sign a letter asking Colorado lawmakers to support the bill. Only two members said 'yes.'
The bill by U.S. Rep. George Miller, a California Democrat, is aimed at creating and saving 1 million public and private jobs. A spokesman for the House Education and Labor Committee says Colorado Springs stands to receive about $42 million under the bill.
But Rivera and other critics of the measure say the spending will just add to the federal deficits.
The National League of Cities is urging support for the bill.
