LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) -- A Longmont police officer is on routine paid leave after shooting and wounding a man wanted on suspicion of misdemeanor assault.

Longmont public safety chief Mike Butler says police believe the officer acted in self-defense.

Police say that around 8:05 a.m. Saturday, the officer spotted 21-year-old Brandon Duke, who started running. Butler says Duke allegedly fired at the officer with a semiautomatic handgun, and the officer returned fire, hitting Duke in the side. The officer wasn't injured.

The officer has been placed on leave while the Boulder County Critical Incident Team investigates the shooting. The officer's name wasn't immediately released.
