DENVER (AP) — A Colorado State Penitentiary inmate has filed a lawsuit seeking a way out of solitary confinement, claiming he's there because of untreated mental illnesses.

The lawsuit filed by University of Denver law students in U.S. District Court Monday claims that prison officials refuse to give inmate Troy Anderson's proper medication for his mental illnesses, which include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The lawsuit claims that Anderson's mental illnesses are well documented but prison officials refuse to acknowledge them.

Anderson is asking a judge to order prison officials to provide effective medication, among other changes. A prison spokeswoman had not seen the lawsuit and could not immediately comment.
