DENVER (AP) -- Voda, a female polar bear at the Denver Zoo who gave birth to five cubs while in captivity, has died.
Denver Zoo officials say veterinary staff euthanized the 23-year-old bear Tuesday after chronic renal disease left her unable to eat. Polar bears typically live between 20 and 25 years.
Voda arrived from Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, S.C., in 1987 and quickly became a popular attraction at the Denver Zoo.
She gave birth to twin cubs in 1999 and 2004, and a single female cub, Cranbeary, in 2001. Cranbeary is one of three remaining polar bears at the Denver Zoo
