DENVER -- The Colorado General Assembly on Tuesday dedicated a portion of State Highway 91 as the "Fallen Heroes Highway."
Highway 91 connects Leadville to Interstate 70 at Copper Mountain. it is 22.5 miles long.
Sen. Mark Scheffel, R-Douglas County, sponsored the measure, which he said was intended to honor the "brave men and women of our Armed Forces for answering our nation's highest calling to serve."
The measure specifically recognized Nicklas James Palmer, who enlisted shortly after graduating high school in 2005. Palmer was known for being among the best in his unit at finding caches of weapons hidden by Iraqi insurgents. While on a routine clearing in 2006, the 19-year old Palmer was tragically killed by a sniper.
"Nicklas Palmer made the ultimate sacrifice for our state and our country," Scheffel said. "We will never forget his heroic service."
