COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU) announced that a rock slide in the high country last week damaged the Homestake pipelin, north of the Otero pump station in Buena Vista. The pipeline delivers up to 70 percent of the city's water, say officials.
The 40-year-old water delivery system will be out of service for about two weeks.
While it is buried five feet deep, the force and weight of the boulders caused a crack that runs the entire circumference of the pipe, according to Bruce McCormick, chief Water Services officer for CSU.
"“We are fortunate that this occurred at a wet time of year, when our reservoirs are at high levels. Therefore, we don't foresee any impacts to water supply for our customers. This is a perfect example of why another pipeline, such as the Southern Delivery System, is so important to our community," McCormick said.
Construction on the Southern Delivery System pipeline is scheduled to begin later this year.
