COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Updated 9 p.m.
Students and staff were evacuated from Holmes Middle School Thursday after several children reported feeling ill.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said they received a call around 2:30 p.m. that a handful of students at Holmes were feeling ill, suffering from nausea, vomiting and headaches due to a possible odor in the building.
A short time after arriving, the CSFD evacuated the school for precautionary reasons.
Four students were taken to the hospital and about 100 others were checked for symptoms.
In total 700 people were evacuated to the Masonic Temple located just around the corner from Holmes.
CSFD called in its Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team to check the school for dangerous chemicals.
Lt. J.J. Halsey said they were not able to find anything wrong at the school, and added it is safe for students and teachers to go back inside. He said they will continue their investigation into what happened.
Friday is a teacher work day, which means students do not have to report to school.
District 11 officials said as long as everything remains safe, Monday will be a normal day.
