DENVER (AP) — State lawmakers are considering delaying enactment of proposed tougher teacher tenure rules for two years.
The Senate Education Committee plans to take more testimony on the bill Thursday before voting on whether it should move forward.
The state teachers' union opposes it despite the proposed delay. It says problems with how teachers are evaluated need to be fixed first before lawmakers decide how teachers should be sanctioned.
Currently, teachers can earn job protections after three years in the classroom. Under the bill, starting in 2013, only educators whose students have improved for three years would be able to earn tenure. Starting in 2014, teachers who have tenure could lose it if their students don't show progress for two straight years.
The measure is Senate Bill 191.
