DENVER (AP) — State agriculture officials have seized 28 cattle from a northeastern Colorado ranch where authorities say they previously found nearly 80 dead cattle.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture says the cattle were seized Tuesday from Gilbert Schuman's Logan County ranch. Assistant State Veterinarian Nick Striegel says authorities believe Schuman wasn't properly caring for the animals.

The Agriculture Department says nearly 80 dead cattle were found on the same ranch in March. Sixteen cattle were taken. Sheriff's investigators say Schuman was charged with 16 counts of cruelty to animals.

A court hearing is set for April 28 to determine if Schuman is an unfit owner. He told The Associated Press Wednesday that the charges are "trumped up" and referred questions to his lawyer.
