DENVER (AP) -- Jim Martin, Colorado's natural resources chief, has been appointed as the new regional administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The regional office in Denver oversees Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming and 27 tribal governments.

Martin was named head of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources last October. Before that, he headed the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

He has also been executive director of Colorado-based Western Resource Advocates, an environmental law and policy organization.

He headed the Natural Resources Law Center at the University of Colorado School of Law and worked for former U.S. Sen. Tim Wirth of Colorado.

Martin is expected to take over from the acting regional EPA administrator in the next several weeks.
