DENVER (AP) -- In full-page newspaper advertisements, the father of Columbine High School shooting victim Daniel Mauser is urging Colorado Sen. Mark Udall to support a bill to expand criminal background checks at gun shows nationwide.

The ads in The Denver Post and the Boulder Camera appeared Monday on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the shootings at Columbine, when two student gunmen killed 13 people before killing themselves. The gunmen's friend had bought three of their weapons at a gun show from a private seller who wasn't required, as federally licensed dealers are, to conduct background checks.

Colorado voters approved a law closing that loophole. Tom Mauser wants Udall to join Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet in supporting a bill to close it nationwide.
