DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- ExxonMobil says it favors disclosing the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing to ease concerns about potential contamination.
In a regulatory filing last week, the oil and gas giant says it understands companies' concerns over giving up their exact formulas, but says disclosing the ingredients could help alleviate concerns.
ExxonMobil's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission follows the company's acquisition of Fort Worth-based XTO Energy, La Plata County's fifth-largest producer, and efforts in Congress to regulate hydraulic fracturing.
The method is used to break up rock and release gas, but has it caused concerns through disclosures that some companies are pumping chemicals such as diesel fuel into the ground.
