COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The city of Colorado Springs, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is urging citizens to take time to prepare for possible weather emergencies. To help area residents get ready for bad weather, a free Citizen Emergency Response Training (CERT) class is offered to citizens in May.
Weather in Colorado Springs can quickly turn dangerous with severe thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning and flooding. Some of the most severe storms in this area have occurred during the summer months.
CERT classes are set for May 4, 6, 11 and 13. The class will be held at the Fire Department Complex, 375 Printers Pkwy., from 6 to 10 p.m. each evening.
Storms may cause persons to be stranded in their homes, worksites or vehicles so it is important to have emergency kits in each location, say city officials.
During major events first responders often are overwhelmed with the number of individual emergencies. Citizens must know how to be self-sufficient during the first critical 72 hours immediately following any type of disaster, whether natural or human-caused. CERT is designed to assist citizens in individual and family preparedness.
CERT provides comprehensive training in disaster preparedness and response. Through classroom learning and hands-on training, participants will learn how to help themselves, their families and their neighbors during and immediately following a disaster.
Topics covered include disaster preparedness; disaster medical assistance; light search and rescue; fire safety; terrorism and disaster psychology. This course does not offer certification in CPR or first aid.
