COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The National Weather Service will conduct a statewide tornado drill on Wednesday, April 14, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. using the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Admospheric Administration (NOAA) system.
KXRM -- FOX21 will activate a crawl that will appear across the television screen notifying viewers that the station is conducting a "tornado warning test."
The purpose, in accordance with EAS and NOAA guidelines, is to ensure the readiness of EAS equipment and emergency radio receivers located in broadcast facilities, schools, hospitals and other public buildings, all designed for the public's safety in case of a weather emergency.
The annual drill is a way for the public to learn simple precautions that could save lives, according to officials from the Colorado Broadcasters Association.
In 2009, 44 tornados were reported to officials across the state, with nearly 700 reports of hail, severe wind and flash floods. In 2008, a large and damaging tornado raced through Weld County and the town of Windsor.
For thunderstorm hazards, including tornados, flash floods, large hail and damaging winds, NOAA will post warning information on its Web site and alarm NOAA Weather All Hazards Radio with new warnings.
