DENVER (AP) -- A former Denver auxiliary archbishop has been named to serve as archbishop for the Los Angeles Catholic diocese.
Fifty-eight-year-old Jose Horacio Gomez served as auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Denver from 2001 to 2005, before being appointed Archbishop of San Antonio, Texas. He is an archbishop of Opus Dei, the conservative movement favored by the Vatican.
Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput said in a statement Tuesday that he congratulates Gomez on his new position.
The Mexican-born Gomez will take over the Los Angeles archdiocese when the current archbishop, Cardinal Roger Mahony retires on Feb. 27 next year, his 75th birthday.
