DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado snowpack didn't improve much in March as an El Nino weather pattern held on.

The snowpack was about 90 percent of average statewide as of Monday, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service. That was up slightly from 88 percent on April 1.

However, reservoir storage was at about 106 percent of average.

The snowpack is above average in southern Colorado river basins, including the Arkansas and Rio Grande. But monthly precipitation totals in parts of the northern mountains have been below average since October.

Mountain snowpack totals typically peak in April. The totals help predict how much spring runoff will be available for agriculture and municipal water systems.

The snowpack percentage is measured against a 30-year average.
