DENVER (AP) -- A man convicted of killing a woman in a dispute over trash at a campsite near Dotsero has been granted a new trial.

The Colorado Court of Appeals reversed the conviction of Charles Anthony Gross on Thursday, saying trial jurors weren't told they could consider self-defense.

Gross was sentenced in 2007 to life in prison plus 100 years for the shooting death of Maria Madrid at the campsite in 2005.

Gross argued with Madrid and her husband and son, claiming they did not clean their campsite. Gross opened fire on their car, killing Madrid and injuring her husband, Eliseo Madrid.

Gross testified that he feared for his life and that he had seen Eliseo Madrid reach under the seat of the car for what he thought was a weapon.
