LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) -- Boulder Community Hospital says it will assume all liability for exposing some patients to the risk of identity theft when medical records were thrown out in an unsecured container.

At least six people have told the hospital they received anonymous letters with sensitive information from their medical records. The letters said the information was taken from a container outside of Physicians Medical Associates in Lafayette, which is a clinic in the hospital's network.

Hospital spokesman Rich Sheehan said the container should have been secured.

The hospital is investigating.

Sheehan said Tuesday that the hospital will pay for a private consultant to work with patients on potential identity-theft issues.
