COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A local wounded warrior was recently awarded the prestigious Tony Snow Public Service Award.
Latoya Lucas was doing a tour of duty in Iraq, and about five months in, she was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. She sufferend major injuries as schrapnel penetrated parts of her body.
She was taken to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., for several months for surgeries and recovery. She underwent colostomy surgery. She has made a full recovery and now uses her experiences to inspire others.
She was nominated by the Great Combacks Program and later received the Tony Snow Public Serivce Award on March 3, 2010.
In addition, she wrote The Immeasurable Spirit: Lessons of a Wounded Warrior. She uses her faith to persevere, and she wants to inspire others to do the same.
