DENVER (AP) — Colorado lawmakers rejected a bill that would punish people who kill a fetus while committing another crime after opponents said it's an attempt to pave the way for a ban on abortion.

Supporters say the measure would specifically protect doctors who perform abortions if their patients consent to the operation.

Opponents say the bill is the first step toward an abortion ban because it would give a fetus the legal status of a human being.

A state Senate committee is scheduled to review the bill Wednesday.
