COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- There are 45,000 census forms that will be hand delivered starting Monday, March 1. Police and the Census Bureau wants everyone to make sure they're not opening the door for a stranger.

“You would see someone who has a census badge. The badge will have the Department of Commerce seal on it and you will also see a bag that says 'Census worker,'” said Karen Willis, local census office manager for Colorado Springs.

Willis tells FOX21 News that  census workers will never ask for money or bank account information. And a letter is sent in advance to the household before a census worker shows up in person.

“It's called 'Update Leave' and mostly those counties are east and west of Colorado Springs are receiving those, and the addresses that are post office boxes or rural routes that we are going to be delivering to,” said Willis.

Most everyone in the Springs should be getting their 2010 census questionnaire by mail the week of March 15. It's 10 questions ranging from what is your sex, to how many people are living in your house.

“The census gives us a population count and with that information we can be able to disperse federal funding of $400 billion as well as representation in our Legislature,” said Willis.

To make sure an individual is a legitimate census worker, call 1-800-852-6159.

For general questions about the census, call 1-800-923-8282.
