DENVER (AP) -- Republican and Democratic state lawmakers are vowing to pass legislation aimed at protecting Colorado dealerships terminated by GM and Chrysler despite a new opposition ad campaign launched by GM.
GM launched the print and newspaper ads Friday. Carmakers can require dealers to make upgrades in their businesses and the bill would require manufacturers to reimburse dealers for those expenses over the last five years. Dealers also would get a right of first refusal if the manufacturers later award another franchise nearby.
GM says those requirements could threaten its ability to return to profitability and could force it to give business to poor performing dealerships.
Lawmakers object to taxpayer-supported GM using its funds to fight the bill.
The measure is House Bill 1049
