AURORA, Colo. (AP) -- Talk about an absentee landlord -- an Aurora man is accused of posing as a landlord and collecting rent on property he didn't own.

John Hartman allegedly posed as a landlord on Craigslist, met with potential tenants and even collected deposits from two families.

One duped tenant tells KMGH-TV in Denver he paid $3,500 in rent and deposits. When tenant Robert Watts showed up on moving day, another family was already living there.

The family living there was also paying rent to Hartman. But Hartman didn't even own the house. Hartman was renting the home from the real owner.

Aurora Police have investigated but said the phony landlord case is a civil matter and that the duped tenants should sue to collect their money.
