DENVER (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has granted a request for disaster designation in several Colorado counties where crops have been affected by drought and an early frost.

Gov. Bill Ritter says Fremont County experienced damaging frost and freezing temperatures on Oct. 8-11.

He says the Western Slope saw a wet spring turn into a very dry summer, damaging crops in Mesa, Montezuma, Dolores, San Miguel and Montrose counties.

The disaster designation means farm operators in those and neighboring counties are eligible for emergency loans from the federal Farm Service Agency.
