Thursday was an emotional day at Vista Ridge High School, as a group of students and parents heard a powerful presentation about Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School ten years ago.

Since her death, family and friends have been carrying her message of kindness and compassion to schools across the country in an attempt to change the way students treat one another.

Rachel's father founded Rachel's Challenge as a bullying and violence prevention program after the tragedy.

Since then millions of students have had the opportunity to accept the challenges modeled after Rachel's life.

Dave Gamache has been a speaker with Rachel's Challenge for over two years.

He said he saw Rachel's brother and father on the Oprah Show and felt compelled to get involved.

"After the Virginia Tech shootings I was looking for something else that would engage kids hearts," Gamache said.

Gamache said he joined Rachel's Challenge soon after.

He said their goal is to motivate students to positively change the way they treat others.

"Rachel's Challenge actually teaches people the power they have everyday to affect lives, most in little things, most people think they have to do huge things but they do not," Gamache said.

Each Rachel's Challenge presentation consists of captivating audio and video footage of the Columbine tragedy, followed by a training session for students and teachers to help them carry the momentum of change.

"Really what the program does for youth is it engages them, when kids hear the story and see how easy it is to do it, they feel like they can tap into that power," Gamache said.

Gamache said during his time with Rachel's Challenge he has seen a lot of hearts changed for the better, including his own.

"My brother and I had not been on good terms for ten years when I heard the program, and in the story we talk about Rachel's brother choosing to forgive the boys who killed his sister, and it inspired me to reach out to my brother and mend that fence," Gamache said.
