COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- During a meeting at Doherty High School, a group of Link Crew leaders and National Honor Society students met to discuss the devastation in Haiti.

"I was just watching the news and seeing how bad it was out there, and thinking about how much we have here and that kids do not appreciate it now, and they do not have anything so I thought we should just help them," Senior and Link Crew member Mark Jones said.

Jones said he thought up the idea for a fundraiser during his basketball game last week.

So after getting his plans approved by the principal, the students kicked off their campaign.

"These are the helping hand charms we made, and we bought some clay and some string and we decided to make them and sell them for a dollar for anyone who wanted to help Haiti," Sophomore and National Honor Society Member Emily Kohut said.

The students also made red ribbons to hand out.

So far they said they have raised over $500, and added they are hoping to raise $1,000 or more.

"I would say anywhere from 30 to 35 kids have stepped up, even kids we do not usually see get involved with school activities, even they have stepped up and helped collect money," Junior and Link Crew President Alex Raines said.

As for where the money will go, the students plan on giving it to the Red Cross.

They said the fundraiser has brought out the best in everyone at the school.

"Doherty is really a huge community, and we are all a big family, I mean all schools will have their diversity, but we come together under a common cause a lot," Junior and Link Crew Vice President Aubrey Hilte said.

If you would like to donate to doherty's fundraiser call Assistant Principal Martha Bodell at 328-6405.
