DENVER (AP) -- Lawmakers are trying to figure out what to do next following a Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance affects the state's own spending limits.

The court overturned two earlier decisions and threw out parts of a 63-year-old law that said companies and unions can be prohibited from spending to produce and run their own campaign ads.

The decision threatens similar limits imposed by 24 states.

Colorado's secretary of state, Bernie Buescher, met with legislative on Friday to talk about the ruling. He's trying to head off a potential lawsuit by the Colorado Republican Party.

Buescher said he hopes to meet with lawyers representing both parties and urge them to think "quietly and thoughtfully" before asking a court to weigh in on the fate of the state law.
