COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- Compassion International (CI) in Colorado Springs says two of its staff members were stationed in Haiti during the deadly earthquake.
Haiti's Prime Minister said the death toll could be in the hundreds of thousands -- meanwhile here in the Springs, members of CI are anxiously waiting to hear from their co-workers.
“We have about 80 staff members based in Haiti and we do have a couple of folks from this office that are traveling, and we have not heard from any of them,” said Mark Hanlon, Senior Vice President, USA Group, CI.
Hanlon tells FOX21 News the mood around the office is very somber. They have been in contact with the two missing staff member’s families.
“These are our families’ members as well. We look at them as family too, so our thoughts, our prayers are with them and they are not alone in this, there are Compassion families with them and we will give them any news that we can and we will keep looking until it's resolved,” said Hanlon.
Hanlon just recently was in Haiti over the summer. He says the infrastructure is so old and not earthquake-proof -- he fears the worst.
“We are absolutely praying for the best and we know it's in Gods hands, at the same time we're preparing for the worst,” said Hanlon.
Compassion International has already sent more than $20,000. They do have teams there now and more are on their way to help with aid.
CI says there are 483 families in Colorado Springs who sponsor a Haitian child. Those sponsors can log onto www.compassion.com for updates on their sponsored children.
