COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Wednesday was an emotional day at Fort Carson as the Mountain Post held a memorial service for three fallen soldiers.
The soldiers honored include Sgt Jason A. McLeod, Sgt. Kenneth R. Nichols Jr, and Sgt. Elijah J. Rao.
"It is important for us to remember the soldiers that we have lost and the sacrifices they have given," Cpt. Ryan Main said.
Cpt. Main said it is still hard to believe three of his fellow soldiers are gone.
He said memorials like the one Wednesday give soldiers the chance to mourn together as brothers and sisters.
"This is after the funerals have been done in their respective states, so this is a time for us when we ask the families to come and mourn with us at Fort Carson," Cpt. Main said.
For those soldiers who knew Sgt. McLeod, Sgt. Nichols and Sgt. Rao, they said their deaths remind them of the importance of their mission.
"Losing a man is not motivating, but it reminds us of why we are here and what we are doing," Cpt. Main said.
And the soldiers said if people truly want to remember the fallen they need to support those still serving, and always remember the sacrifice made by the families left to fight the battle at home.
"It is just a thankless job for the most part, and the majority of the country does not have a clue what is going on, so it is important to show their faces and tell their stories, I mean the parents are not the only ones that mourn," Cpt. Gabriel Suarez said.
