COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- School administrators came together Monday in the fight against violence in schools. The training course was taught by clinical psychologist Dr. Dewey Cornell. Cornell has worked with many juvenile and adult violent offenders -- some of whom made national headlines.

Larry Borland, chief of security in Academy School District 20, told FOX21 News the training will result in more efficient responses to a threat.

“Somewhere in the Pikes Peak region, we have a school threat everyday,” said Borland.

According to Cornell's training course, a common denominator among many of the school shooters is bullying. He says the killer at one point was severely bullied or teased by other classmates. A major portion of the training was how to detect bullying and how to resolve it.

“We want all of our kids to be safe. We want them to be safe and comfortable when they are at their schools, and that's why we don't want people to engage in bullying and we want to bring everyone's awareness up about the dangerous of bullying,” said Borland.

Another subject discussed was making an environment where the student feels comfortable to talk to a teacher, counselor or an on campus resource officer.

“School violence runs the gamut. It goes through K[indergarten] all the way up to college, The child that's a senior in high school this year is a freshman in college next year, so we kind of look at these kids as all our kids,” said Borland.

More than 160 school representatives attended the training. Law enforcement, school administrators, councilors, school psychologists and social workers from local districts and as far away as boulder were in attendance.
