BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Development limits in Boulder are taking effect Monday after years of debate.

The city's new "compatible development" ordinance limits infill development that dwarfs neighboring houses. The requirements come after years of griping about so-called "McMansions" popping up in older neighborhoods of modest homes.

The ordinance limits how much square footage buildings can take up on a lot, how tall they can be and sets other size requirements.

City officials say they want to prevent large houses from looming over neighbors. Some landowners and developers fought the limits for years, warning they'll chill investment in the college town. A review of the new ordinance is set for next summer.
