COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- With the new year come new beginnings, a fresh start to a fresh new year -- and by starting that new year off, many people join a gym.

A personal trainer from 24 Hour Fitness tells FOX21 News the business sees a 50 to 80 percent increase in members during the month of January.

“There is a huge population of people that want to start in the beginning of the year, which makes sense. You think  'It's 2010, a new year and a new start,'” said Jamal Smith, personal trainer.

Smith says tons of people have the right idea to start the new year by eating healthier and exercising on a daily basis but after a few of months, it starts to fade.

“I see January, February and March there's a huge crowd, then people start dying out,” said Smith.

The reason? Smith says people get bored. He advises people to do something different, take a class, use a different exercise machine and change it up. Smith also says most importantly getting any kind of exercise is good for your mind, body and soul.

“A doctor once told me if you can put exercise in a pill, it would probably be the most powerful pill in the world because exercise cures so many defendants: stress, a lot of diseases, and a lot of disease prevention. So it's very essential to stay physically healthy by exercising,” said Smith.

If you don't want to pay for a gym membership, Smith says, walking or running outside is a great way to get into shape and get the results you want.
