BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP) -- A man had to be rescued from Quandary Peak Sunday after he crashed while using a parachute to glide down part of the 14,000-foot mountain.

The Summit County Rescue group says he was speed gliding, a sport that's popular in Europe and is also known as speed flying or ski gliding. It involves skiing using a foot-launched parachute which, depending on the wind and conditions, can lift the skier off the ground intermittently.

Rescuers say the man was one of two who skied down the East Ridge planning to use the chutes to glide down from there. The other man glided safely to the bottom but the second man reportedly "lost wind" and crashed.

Five hikers stayed with him until help arrived. It took rescuers eight hours to get him off the mountain.
