COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- Colorado Springs police say one out of 20 cars driving through malls and shopping centers this week is likely driven by someone who is going to try and break into a car.
“There's a high frequency of this during this time of year because it's a target-rich environment. The criminals know that these kinds of items are inside your vehicle,” said Lt. David Whitlock, Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
Police tell FOX21 News the best place to put valuables and presents are inside the car's trunk. Police say a savvy criminal is looking for packages, gym bags, GPS units, MP3 players and of course, presents.
“It’s a crime of opportunity so when somebody sees something in your car that's when they seize their chance. If they don't see anything, they will just move onto the next vehicle," said Whitlock.
Police say shoppers need to avoid concentrating so hard on shopping, and be aware of your surroundings. Carry minimal cash and wear minimal jewelry, try to shop with friends or family and avoid walking to your car alone -- especially when at night.
Police say go to a store clerk or security guard if you don't feel it's safe to walk outside and most importantly, if you notice suspicious behavior, call 911.
