COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Ninety-three Colorado Springs city employees are being laid off, and 88 more have opted for early retirement as the city works to cut costs next year.

City spokeswoman Sue Skiffington-Blumberg said Thursday that for many, their last day of work will be this month. She says some won't be laid off until March 31, pending fundraising efforts by city council and business plan partnerships for parks and recreation and for select cultural services programs and facilities.

She says the layoff numbers don't include vacant police, fire, streets and other jobs that have been permanently eliminated. She says the city has cut more than 400 positions in the last 18 months.
