DENVER (AP) -- Former U.S. Attorney Troy Eid is supporting Denver lawyer John Walsh III to become the next U.S. attorney for Colorado now that President Barack Obama's nominee has withdrawn.

Eid, a Republican, wrote a letter to Democratic Sen. Mark Udall backing Walsh, a former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles.

Former Republican state Sen. Norma Anderson says she also has written Udall to endorse Walsh.

Walsh declined to comment.

Obama's nominee, Stephanie Villafuerte, withdrew Monday amid a flap over access to a restricted law enforcement database during Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter's 2006 campaign. She's now Ritter's deputy chief of staff.

Udall and then-Sen. Ken Salazar suggested Walsh, Villafuerte and Pueblo County District Attorney Bill Thiebaut to Obama for U.S. attorney.
