DENVER (AP) — The state health department has launched a pilot program to help people get rid of unwanted medication safely.

Tamper-resistant disposal boxes are now available at several King Soopers stores on the Front Range and City Market stores in Breckenridge and Dillon.

The health department says the disposal boxes will help keep unwanted drugs out of hands of children or drug abusers and out of the public water supply. Trace amounts of medication have been found at wastewater treatment plants, mainly from people flushing unwanted drugs down the toilet.
