COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- With temperatures dipping so low this week, the Colorado Springs Fire Department is warning people of potential dangers.
They have a number of tips and precautions for residents to keep them safe in the frigid weather.
First they suggest people stay indoors if at all possible If not they say it is important to wear the appropriate winter gear.
Captain Jesse Ortiz, emergency manager for the city of Colorado Springs, said the the colder the temperatures, the less time one should spend outside. He said if you are out on the road, make sure to have an emergency travel kit in your car in case you get stranded.
"We recommend 72 hours kits with basic supplies, so food water and extra clothing, and not only for themselves but for any passengers," Ortiz said.
Along with staying warm, Ortiz said people need to be cautious of carbon monoxide poisoning in their cars and at their homes.
If in your car he said keep your windows rolled down for ventilation and always make sure your tailpipe is clear of snow.
"The fire department always recommends people have carbon monoxide detectors in their homes as well as a fire extinguisher in case a fire were to start," Ortiz said.
If your children want to play in the snow, Ortiz said make sure they are dressed appropriately and do not allow them outside for long periods of time.
He also suggested regularly checking on elderly neighbors to make sure they are okay.
