EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- A van crossed the center line early Thursday afternoon on Ellicott Highway north of Jones Road and hit a pick-up truck carrying an adult and three children. All were air-lifted to Memorial Hospital Central from Hwy. 94 and Curtis, where they were driven by ambulance.

The driver of the van was trapped and had to be extricated. He is said to be in critical condition. The driver of the pick-up truck is said to be in serious condition. The children are said to be in good condition with minor injuries. They are ages 3, 4 and 5.

State patrol officials say the truck swerved to avoid the van, but was unable to avoid the collision, according to a witness on the scene. The witness was traveling behind the pick-up truck and saw the pick-up driver slam on his brakes before colliding with the van.

Debris was spread for about 150 yards in the crash area.

Colorado State Patrol is still investigating the incident.

Updates will be posted as they become available.
