DENVER (AP) -- The National Weather Service has a new weather station that can provide it with data from central Denver for the first time in more than a decade.

The station is on the City Park golf course.

Since 1995, the National Weather Service has been getting its official Denver weather readings from Denver International Airport, about 18 miles from downtown. Before that, official data was recorded at the old Stapleton Airport, closer to downtown.

The new weather station will give the agency more data, but from the heart of the city.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science owns and operates the new facility. Weather instrument manufacturer Vaisala Inc., whose North American headquarters is in Louisville, donated the instruments.
