COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- Measure 2c would be a tax increase but it would be phased in over five years, supporters say it would mean the difference for hundreds of people keeping their jobs.
“The cuts are very deep and they are very severe and 2C is designed to actually prevent some of those cuts from happening,” said Jan Martin, City Council member.
Supports say, a "no" vote will greatly affect the city negatively. Colorado Springs public safety departments will shrink by at least 60 positions, bus services will be restricted, service to and from Ft. Carson and Schriever Air Force base will be entirely eliminated, seven city pools and six community centers will be closed, as well as the Pioneers Museum. And several city parks would no longer be maintained. Also, youth sports programs will be significantly diminished.
“It really has the potential between transit and parks, then if you even consider the public safety aspect, It really does have the potential to affect everyone one of us in Colorado Springs," said Jan Martin.
