BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- A new biotechnology and biomedical research and teaching facility being built at the University of Colorado in Boulder will house researchers working on a wide variety of health issues.

The groundbreaking for the new center is set for Wednesday. The Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building will house more than 60 faculty members and more than 500 researchers and support staffers.

Nobel laureate and CU professor Tom Cech says researchers in fields from biochemistry to physics to computer science will have opportunities to work together. Biotech companies will be able to collaborate with faculty and students.

Research teams in the new facility will come from eight CU departments, including applied math, chemical and biological engineering, ecology and evolutionary biology.
