DENVER (AP) -- Law enforcement agencies across Colorado are gearing up to crack down on drunken drivers over the Labor Day weekend.

Colorado officers have made 983 DUI arrests since Aug. 21 in an ongoing national enforcement effort that ends Tuesday. There will be a dozen sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols across the state this weekend.

Police from Boulder, Longmont and Lafayette are joining the Boulder County sheriff's department in stepping up enforcement in the county. The annual showdown between the University of Colorado and Colorado State University football teams is in Boulder Sunday.

There will also be a sobriety checkpoint at Rocky Mountain National Park.
