DENVER (AP) -- A state ethics commission created to increase accountability and transparency in government has been found in violation of the state's open meeting law by improperly meeting in private.

A ruling Monday by Denver Chief District Judge Larry Naves ordered the Independent Ethics Commission to turn over recordings that include conversations with its attorneys.

Naves said the commission didn't follow state law when meeting in closed sessions with its attorneys. Such conversations aren't usually public, but the judge said the commission violated the law by failing to say what the discussions were about.

Media attorney Chris Beall argued the case on behalf of The Colorado Independent, which challenged the commission.

Jane Feldman, the commission's executive director, didn't not immediately return a call.
