BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- A man serving a 72-year prison term for a rape conviction has pleaded not guilty to new charges of killing a woman in Longmont 16 years ago.

Forty-eight-year-Rudy Gaytan entered his plea Monday in Boulder County District Court. He's charged with first-degree murder and attempted sexual assault in the strangulation death of 30-year-old Tammera Tatum.

Tatum's common-law husband discovered her body in her apartment in April 1993. Their 1-year-old daughter was found crying in the same room.

Gaytan was linked to Tatum's slaying through DNA evidence when evidence was reanalyzed this year. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 16.

He was convicted in 2007 of raping a 19-year-old woman in 1996.
