El Paso County approves recall petition
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The names of two Falcon School District-49 board members are officially on a recall petition.
A community group is trying to recall board members Kent Clawson and Dave Martin.
Both of the board members' terms would end in 2011.
They are the only two board members not already up for re-election in November.
El Paso County approved the petition Tuesday.
This community group began pursuing a recall in March in response to what they call a lack of transparency and accountability.
They will need about 3,500 signatures per board member to get this recall on the November ballot.
Tracy Stuehm calls the petition a message to the Falcon School Board.
"I just want to make sure the board knows this is not going away. We are ready to move forward and be successful," said Stuehm.
Over 100 parents began the recall effort after the board got rid of former superintendent Grant Schmidt and then almost let go two high school principals.
"It's just been a consistent problem that the board does not communicate with the public," Stuehm said.
"One of the issues with transparency when it comes to personnel matters I don't care if I'm sitting on that board today or if they are tomorrow they're not going to be able to discuss personnel issues," said Martin.
"We've got legally binding things I can't talk about certain things as much as I'd like to," said Clawson.
Both men welcome the upcoming battle of the ideas.
"I totally cherish the system that allows for this," Clawson said.
"If they get their signatures that's the community telling me they don't want me to do that for them anymore and I won't," Martin said.
The community group is holding a public meeting at Saturday at 9 A.M., at the Stetson Hills police substation community room.
They'll be discussing how to go about getting signatures before getting started.
If you'd like to sign a petition you are encouraged to attend.
