DENVER (AP) — A bill that would allow firefighters to unionize and negotiate contracts is up for a vote in the Colorado Senate.

Right now, cities can decide whether to allow police and firefighters to organize and allow collective bargaining to reach an employment contract.

The measure being debated by senators Tuesday, Senate Bill 180, would not give firefighters the right to strike.

Senators have also exempted departments that have fewer than 30 firefighters.

The bill is opposed by the Colorado Municipal League.
