FALCON, COLO. -- "You feel betrayed as a public community member here you are expecting one thing from the board and its not there," said Jackie Vialpando.

Disappointment with the District 49 School Board is growing.

Especially after Thursday night's board meeting that didn't decide the fate of two principals whose jobs are in limbo.

In mid-March, Falcon School District 49 decided not to renew the employment contracts for two high school principals, Mike Collins from Sand Creek High School, and his wife, Sandy, from Vista Ridge High School.

Hundreds of parents and students protested the decision.

Parents expected the board to vote to renew both Mike and Sandy Collins' contracts in Thursday night's board meeting.

Dozens of parents don't want the principals to go. and many sat in the meeting until after 11:00 PM waiting to for a verdict, but one never came.

Back in March parent and student protests ended with the school board deciding not to get rid of the principals just yet, and to create a "plan of action" for Principals Mike and Sandy Collins.

Thursday night's agenda included an item titled "Approval of matters relating to licensed personnel" parents assumed that meant the Collins' contracts.

"It was never even talked about they wouldn't even say if they were or weren't talking about it," Vialpando said.

Board President Anna Bartha said there was no timeline given to accept the contracts and said the board is waiting to see if the principals performance improves under their "new plan of action."

But in March FOX 21 obtained a statement on behalf of Bartha that said," The board plans to vote to approve employment contracts for the 2009-2010 school year for both Mike Collins and Sandy Collins at the April board meeting."

Board member Dave Martin made the same statement when we spoke to him in March.

"In the April meeting we will take an official vote to renew those contracts," said Martin.

Bartha said Martin's statement did not reflect the opinion of the entire board. She also doesn't know where the statement came from, but believes the district's information officer released the statement and mis-spoke.

I did ask what that plan of action entailed, Bartha said she couldn't say for legal reasons nor could she say what improvements the board is looking for.

Just that, "We hold everyone to an A-plus standard."

"Every thing seems like its so covert there," said Vialpando.

This controversy is heightened by the board's search for a new superintendent.

For the last five years, the longest a superintendent has stayed with the district is two years, and that was an interim superintendent.

The search for a new superintendent is what the board spent most of the Thursday night discussing.

Bartha said there will be another meeting Tuesday, but that the Collins' contracts likely wont be discussed.

The Collins said they were surprised their contracts weren't voted on in Thursday's meeting. They also said they are remaining optimistic.
