22-year-old charged with first degree murder
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- One man is dead tonight following an early morning shooting at a parking lot adjacent to Mr. Biggs in Colorado Springs.
The shooting happened just after midnight following a concert with rapper E-40.
Police arrested 22-year-old Terry Gaines and are charging him with first degree murder.
This is the third homicide this week.
"It happened real fast. I heard the shots fired, and people were running to see what happened," said Blake Casselberry.
Police rushed to help the male in his 20's who had been shot while sitting in his car.
Others chased after Gaines who was heading the wrong direction down Mark Dabling.
"The individual was obviously trying to avoid having any interaction with our officers," said Lt. David Whitlock.
Gaines got on 1-25 heading south and the Colorado State Patrol took over, following him all the way to Pueblo where officers stopped Gaines using stop sticks.
"It's like running over a paper bag but then you can hear the air coming out of the tires like a hissing," said Cpl. Randy Novotny.
Chief Executive Officer Steve Bigari told me the concert was held after hours and only people 16 and over were admitted.
Bigari also said he is "devastated by the senseless shooting."
"I'm angry about the situation but at the same time this situation can happen anywhere not just at a hip hop event," said Promoter James Baldrick.
A tragic end for a tour promoting peace, and for an artist who's recent concert in Denver also saw shot fired following the show and five injured.
"We were concerned about mad we had those officers there as a precaution and it was a good thing we did," said Whitlock.
Police aren't releasing the victim's identity. They're waiting until the investigation is complete and are waiting on an autopsy.
On a side note, Bigari says Mr. Biggs has hosted hundreds of concerts including seven rap concerts in the the past and none have gotten violent. However, Bigari says he will not be allowing another rap group to play at Mr.. Biggs again.
At this time police aren't saying why Gaines shot the victim.
They're not releasing Gaines picture either until the investigation is complete.
This is the 7th homicide this year in Colorado Springs.
