Thursday's storm melting off fast

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- How bad was the storm for drivers?

In Colorado Springs, police received 156 calls for accidents.

That number doesn't include cold reports or areas outside of the city.

The majority of those crashes did not involve serious injuries.

As far road conditions for Friday night into Saturday morning are concerned, you do still need to be aware of melting sludge and run off water still on some streets.

Whatever doesn't dry up will ice over, and while it will be better than Thursday, police don't want drivers getting a false sense of security.

Today's puddles are almost all that remains of yesterday's sometimes blinding snow along the roads.

Colorado Springs dispatchers were non-stop busy for a good three hours between 1PM and 4PM.

"For a short time we had every 911 call lit up. we had a lot of traffic accidents being reported, a lot of traffic hazards," said Dispatch Communications Training Coordinator Kerry Doll.

"I would have expected a cat storm would have been declared out of what was evolving at the time," said American Family Insurance District Manager Jim Whitlock.

American Family Insurance declares a catastrophe storm when at least 300 insurance claims are reported.

This morning, Whitlock was in for a surprise. The agency hasn't even come close to that many claims.

"We insure about 45,000 cars in the Pike's Peak region and we only had a total of 50 claims reported so far, which is outstanding," Whitlock said.

"It seems as though people really took the warning. People stayed home and got off the roads," Doll said.

For anyone who did get in an accident and plans on cold reporting it to police, remember you only have 72 hours following the accident to do so.

All you have to do is go to www.springspolice.com, click on the report a minor traffic accident tab, and fill out the forms.

One problem dispatchers did have was the amount of hang ups on the 911 line.

If you aren't getting through and hang up, dispatchers still have to call you back, and they say that takes more time than if you just hold.
